Fall has long been known as the season of change. The tree leaves begin to turn colors and the weather temperatures become cool and crisp. Soon that sun-kissed glow will begin to fade and the effects of the summer sun on your skin, will become more visible. Here are a few products I recommend for you to incorporate into your home skincare routine. With proper and consistent use, these products will aide in repairing summer sun damage and help to restore skin going forward toward the fall season.
Antioxidants
A little fun in the sun has its benefits. Sunlight stimulates the body’s production of vitamin D, a crucial vitamin for strong healthy bones. A beautiful sunny day can effect your overall well- being by boosting your mood and encouraging you to disconnect from technology and spend some time outdoors. Unfortunately the sun can be too much of a good thing.
Sun exposure is the number one cause of free radical damage on the skin. Free radical damage creates a mutation of the DNA in your skin cells that suppresses the formation of new healthy skin cells and weakens your skin’s natural healing process. These mutations overtime can result in premature aging of the skin and sometimes skin cancers. Similar to the way we eat antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables to stay healthy and ward off illness, applying antioxidants to the skin will help to repair existing free radical skin damage and prevent further damage caused by daily sun exposure.
Use an antioxidant blend during the day as an added defense against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Then apply a powerful vitamin c serum at night to repair damage to the skin and address visible signs of aging.
Lightening Serum
Hyperpigmentation also known as “Sun Spots” is one of the top skin care concerns in my treatment room and rightfully so, because Texas experiences longer periods of warmer weather and bright sunny skies. While many of you may have done your best this past summer to avoid the sun and were vigilant to apply a protective sunscreen, it is possible that you may still have gotten a little color to your skin.
During your skin’s natural exfoliation process, this unintentional tan will begin to fade and you may start to notice some unwanted brown spots left behind. It’s important to remember that not all discoloration is the same. Some of these sun spots may be superficial, meaning that some of the discoloration from that afternoon jog may diminish after a few facials, while a bad sun burn from the past will take more time to fade.
Lightening serums are best to use during the fall when long term sun exposure becomes less frequent. They help reduce melanin production that causes discoloration and brightens the skin to gradually fade existing hyperpigmentation. You may extend the use of a lightening serum into the winter months; however, dry winter skin may be too sensitive as some lightening serums are formulated with natural brightening acids.
Sunscreen
Summer may be over but don’t push that sunscreen to the back of the cabinet just yet! In fact, you should have a facial sunscreen sitting on your bathroom counter or vanity all year long. Many of my clients think that just because the summer season is over, they are safe from the sun’s harmful UV-rays.
Think about how often the sun hits your face in your car on your daily commute or maybe the few hours you will spend outside taking pictures in the pumpkin patch. There is never a day when people won’t experience some length of sun exposure. Most importantly you do not want to reverse any progress you have made in repairing sun damaged skin with the use of the previously discussed products.
For those on-the-go or if you prefer a minimal skin care routine, you may choose to use a 2 in 1 hydrating SPF application. If you like more of a matte finish, an oil-free formula may work best for you. Either way, you should be using a daily sunscreen and It should be the last skin care product applied before your makeup.
