It’s no surprise that eating fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet, but did you know that some fruits such contain natural skin exfoliants known as enzymes, that can decongest pores and brighten your complexion?
The outer most layer of our skin is made primarily of thickened dead skin cells known as keratinocytes. Keratin is a tough fiberous protein that protects the skin and maintains the skin’s structural integrity. Keratinocytes are usually shed away and replaced by new skin cells pushing through to the surface, during the skin’s natural exfoliation process. Enzymes work to speed up this process, by breaking down and digesting keratin proteins into smaller particles.
Both acids (chemical peels) and enzymes will stimulate the renewal of healthy skin, but there are a few ways in which they differ. Enzymes are derived from fruit and do not contain acids or granular exfoliants such as silica crystals or sugar. This means there is no irritation caused by the friction of mechanical exfoliation and while some enzymes may cause a slight tingling sensation to the skin, there is no burning or discomfort that is sometimes experienced during a chemical peel. Acids loosen and lift dead skin cells from the surface and can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, depending on the type of acid. Enzymes work only on the surface of the skin to dissolve dead skin cells. This makes enzymes ideal for those with sensitive skin and my preferred method of exfoliation during seasons of long-term sun exposure.
I love using the Sorella Apothecary Blackberry Lime Fruitfoliant in my treatment room. It smells good enough to eat , though I wouldn’t recommend it, and helps to prevent blemishes while smoothing and softening the texture of your skin.
You can experience the benefits of exfoliating enzymes in a professional facial treatment or by incorporating them into your at home skin care regimen twice a week. It is important to remember that while enzymes gently exfoliate the skin, you should still apply a sunscreen daily. This will ensure a healthy glowing complexion.
