Your skin is going to represent you for a long time, so you will want to do your best to take good care of it. I know life can get quite hectic. Sometimes you are lucky if you remember to take your make-up off before going into bed. Here are a few of my wholesome skin care habits that will help you to increase the longevity of your healthy skin.
Wear a facial sunscreen daily
Ok, ladies; I’m going to say this as many times as it takes. Some of your foundation makeup products come with a sunscreen protection component; however, these products will not necessarily provide the same protection, nor are they meant to replace a dedicated sunscreen product.
Yes, I know that certain foundations list high SPF numbers. But my concern is with the amount of sunscreen make-up that most women apply is very small relative to the amount of sunscreen alone. Consequently, the sunscreen protection is more limited than recommended levels for adequate protection.
To ensure ample protection from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, I suggest that you first apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen product and let it set. Be sure to use a nickel-size dollop of sunscreen on your face and neck daily then follow with your makeup. Trust me; your healthy and beautiful skin will thank you later.
See your dermatologist once a year
Having an annual visit with your dermatologist could be vital in the early detection of skin cancer. This is because skin cancer is one of the only types of cancers you can see. Before your appointment you should make note of any changes in your skin and classify unusual spots or discolorations (brown or red).
The signs of skin cancer can also be found in both the nailbeds and the scalp, so be sure to remove nail polish and loosen your ponytail or bun for a proper examination. If you have not previously had atypical moles or a history of skin cancer, your visit may be very brief. Remember to be your advocate and don’t hesitate or feel embarrassed to ask questions that you may have regarding prevention, treatments, or fancy medical terms you don’t understand.
Drink more water
Drinking water is necessary for many of the natural processes that take place in our bodies. For instance, regulating natural healing in the body, flushing out toxins, and transporting nutrients within cells are all processes that require water. All of these body functions happen at the cellular level and affect the health of your skin.
Having a refillable water bottle on hand will help you to drink water consistently throughout the day. You can make drinking water fun by adding a fresh twist of lemon or cucumber slices.
Stop picking at your face
Excessive picking does more harm than good. When you pick at your face, you increase redness and inflammation, making it harder for blemishes to heal on their own. Using your fingernails can tear the skin and put you at risk for infection caused by germs found underneath your nails. Skin tears caused by picking may also lead to scabbing, scarring, and discoloration. Try not to use magnifying mirrors that make blemishes appear worse than they are because this leads to unnecessary picking.
Practice progress not perfection
We all want healthy, beautiful, glowing skin, but what is important to remember is that not everyone’s skin is the same. What may work for some people may not work for you. Your skin is continuously evolving; therefore, skincare is a process that will continue to develop. To set realistic skincare goals, you must treat the current condition of your skin and focus on improving one skin concern at a time, rather than trying to cure everything with one facial or one product.
