Believe it or not, we do get our fair share of winter weather here in south Texas. It’s a nice break from the usual scorching heat, but the dry winter air can wreak havoc on the skin. During the winter, I see an influx of clients experiencing flaky and itchy skin due to the change in season. Here are few winter skin care tips, I share with my clients to help keep their skin smooth and hydrated.
Avoid hot showers and baths
I know this seems like a crazy idea during the winter. Trust me, there’s nothing I love more than a hot steamy shower. Unfortunately, hot water breaks down the lipid barrier, which causes the skin to lose moisture and become dehydrated. Lukewarm water is best, and you should always apply a body moisturizer or hydrating body oil afterwards to replace moisture.
Use a humidifier
When you live in Texas, any temperature below 70 degrees is considered cold weather. This means the heaters indoors are on for long periods of time. Having the heater on creates dry air, in addition to the dry winter air outdoors. Yikes! The dry air quickly evaporates the natural moisture from your skin, leaving you feeling like a raisin. A humidifier will put moisture back into the air.
Switch up your moisturizer
It’s no secret that you should be using a daily moisturizer. However, if your skin becomes dry and flaky during the cold winter months, you need to switch to a moisturizer that’s more emollient. You may consider a moisturizer that is oil-based. The oil will strengthen the lipid barrier and protect the outer layer of the skin, while helping to retain moisture.
Protect your lips
Chapped lips are not only unsightly, but when left untreated, can crack and even bleed. Keep lips soft and healthy by applying a lip balm. Leave your lip balm by your keys so you don’t’ forget to apply some. For maximum hydration, use a lip balm made of mostly butters and oils, like shea and almond oil. Avoid Chapstick, which can be too waxy and contain irritating ingredients such as menthol.
Hydrate from the inside out
Let me start by saying that drinking water is great for your overall health. The truth is, drinking water has little impact on the moisture level of your skin. Many people drink plenty of water and still experience occasional dry skin. This is because your skin is the last organ to receive nutrients from the water we drink. Instead pay more attention to the food you eat. Foods rich with essential fatty acids like fish and avocado, help increase and protect the lipid barrier. Most fruits, are full of natural vitamins and powerful antioxidants that fight and repair free-radical damage.
